Multi‐Ion Oscillitons—Origin of Coherent Magnetospheric EMIC Waves

The recent spacecraft observations by MMS and Van Allen Probes associated with electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves in the Earth magnetosphere emphasize important role of multi-ion plasma composition for generation characteristics these emissions. We show that main properties coherent EMIC can be explained concept “multi-ion oscillitons” (Sauer et al., 2001, https://doi.org/10.1029/2001GL013047). In a two types ions different masses (e.g., protons oxygen ions), oscillitons arise from exchange momentum energy between components, field acting as mediator. At frequencies near cross-over wave modes nonlinear resonance which strongly amplifies seed unstable mode excited. A small phase difference oscillations species leads to beating packets. “resonance” frequency is characterized local maximum velocity coincidence group velocity.
